After obtaining my PhD in 2010 on Gender Dysphoria in Adolescents,  I continued to build a line of research on transgender adolescent care, combining clinical and managerial responsibilities with clinical research. My research always has a direct link to clinical practice. An important and much cited paper, not included in my PhD thesis, was published in 2014: Young Adult Psychological Outcomes after Puberty Suppression and Gender Reassignment, followed by my 2016 paper ‘Poor peer relations predict parent- and self-reported behavioral and emotional problems of adolescents with gender dysphoria’. I supervised master students and clinical psychiatry residents who worked on further data collection on the Adolescent Amsterdam Cohort of Gender incongruence. This resulted in various Master thesis projects that were published as scientific papers. At present, I have been able to assign six trainees on the following PhD projects (in five I am the co-promotor): 1) the co-occurrence of autism and gender dysphoria, 2) capacity for informed consent of transgender adolescents, 3) long term follow up of transgender adolescence into middle adulthood, 4) sexual development of transgender adolescents,  5) shared decision making in transgender care, and 6) pathways in gender identity exploration and affirmation. In addition, I have one post-doc project: Development of a Tool for assessing Capacity for Informed Consent. In 2013 I received a grant to conduct the Dutch field study project on the acceptability and clinical utility of the proposed WHO-ICD-11 Gender Incongruence diagnosis. Between 2013 and 2017 I was local co PI on the European Union Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/ 2007-2013); dsd-LIFE project, a clinical European study on the outcome of surgical and hormonal therapy and psychological intervention in disorders of sex development (dsd), resulting in co-authoring several papers and first author on one.  

Annelou de Vries is a child and adolescent psychiatrist working at the Amsterdam UMC. The scope of her work is consultative-liaison psychiatry at the Pediatric department, focusing on sick children with mental health problems. An important and special part of her work is dedicated to transgender adolescents. Apart from her clinical work with these adolescents, Annelou de Vries is also involved in research and publishes and supervises several studies on mental health and treatment evaluation. Annelou de Vries is leading the Child Psychiatry Department of the Center of Expertise on Gender Dysphoria of the Amsterdam UMC. She is a founding board member of the European Professional Association of Transgender Health (EPATH) and a member of the World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH) committee on children and adolescents. Annelou de Vries is further full staff member of the department of child and adolescent psychiatry and as such participating in teaching and training of medical students, nurses, and pediatric and child & adolescent psychiatry residents.
