Personal profile

Research interests

I obtained my PhD in the surgical treatment of Atrial fibrillation. In our research group the possibilities that cardiac surgery offers are used to deepen our knowledge in the mechanisms and origin of atrial fibrillation. We developed the largest database and biobank in our field and can correlate biological differences with success rate. It is currently used by me to compare catheter based outcome with surgical treatment in a randomized trial.

I am developing a comparable setup in the concomitant treatment of atrial fibrillation. At this moment, there is no evidence for ant optimal treatment. A randomized trial will be conducted to compare the different treatment options

Next to atrial fibrillation, aortic surgery is my main surgical focus. I designed and implemented a prospective database within our department to collect surgical data of our aortic surgery, as well as follow up data of our patients. The data will be used to connect and participate in national and international databases as a center and by me to develop predictive models for optimal treatment in our own patient population
