Dr. Esmee M. Reijnierse is an early career researcher and specialized in gerontology and sarcopenia. She currently works as a postdoctoral researcher within the Ageing & Vitality research programme of the Amsterdam Movement Sciences (AMS) research institute at Amsterdam UMC (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) and is also an honorary postdoctoral research fellow a the University of Melbourne (Melbourne, Australia). Dr. Reijnierse her research interests relate to sarcopenia, nutrition and mobility in older adults.
She graduated in Nutrition and Dietetics (BHealth, 2012) and Sports Dietetics (Post-Bachelor, 2013) at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (The Netherlands). She subsequently studied Health Sciences (Masters) with a specialization in Nutrition & Health (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam). After obtaining her Master of Science degree (MSc, 2014), she started her research career as a PhD student in sarcopenia at the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam (October 2014). She successfully defended her PhD thesis in April 2017 entitled: “MUSCLE MATTERS! Recognizing the clinical relevance of the ageing muscle”. Subsequently, she moved to Australia to pursue her research career internationally and started working as a postdoctoral research fellow in the @AgeMelbourne research group at the Department of Medicine and Aged Care of the University of Melbourne (Melbourne, Australia). She is co-founder and president of GoSARC – the Global Sarcopenia Alliance for Researchers and Clinicians in early career – which aims to unite, share knowledge and collaborate with early career researchers and clinicians with an interest in sarcopenia. She is also the chair of the Early- and Mid-Career Researchers and clinicians (EMCR) Committee of the Australian and New Zealand Society for Sarcopenia and Frailty Research (ANZSSFR).
