As a psychiatrist and neuroscientist my general research aim is to apply cognitive neuroscience to come to a more profound understanding of psychiatric disease and to develop novel, theory-driven treatments. Currently, I apply this approach to trauma-related and personality disorders and focus on the role of sleep and sleep-related memory processes in the etiology and treatment of these disorders. I specifically investigate behavioral sleep interventions, like targeted memory reactivation, in patients in an attempt to increase therapeutic effectiveness. I use polysomnography and neuroimaging (fMRI) to elucidate the underlying neurobiological mechanisms.
