All activities can be summarised as research on 'Professional Performance of Physicians'.

Studies and practice include physicians' performance evaluation systems in (i) Graduate Medical Education, (ii) patient care delivery, and (i) physivcians' well-being. MOst widely used systems include the SETQ system (System for Evaluation of Teaching Qualities), DRECT (Dutch Residency Educational Climate Test), TeamQ (teamwork in teachnig teams) and INCEPT/IFMS (Individual Performance Medical Specialists). In this field of research the focus is on measuring, explaining and improving the quality of graduate medical education and patient care quality. Various Professional Performance (PP) assessment systems have been developed (see above) and are being offered to hospitals and specialist groups/residency programs.

Emerging research themes are (1) the learning climate in residency training and its relation with patient quality and safety, (2) physicians' well-being (positive and negatieve aspects) and the impact on their professional performance and (3) compassionte healthcare.

Over 65 teaching institutions and/or approx. 15.000 teaching faculty and residents are participating in the PP program. The research group is investigating the various aspects of the systems and their broader contexts - including the role of the peer mentor in discussing performance feedback - in order to create new knowledge on understanding high quality teaching performance/residency training and its link with clinical performance of faculty.

Other fields of intrest are feedback, work engagement, empathy & compassion, professionalism, physicians' performance concerns, and performance governance.
