Research interests

One of my research interest is optimisation and safe introduction of fluorescence guided surgery: 1. tumour imaging, 2. sentinel lymph node mapping, 3. real-time fluorescence angiography, 4. imaging of vital structures. Along these 4 different topics, various research protocols and projects are initiated or are in development. I have been the co-promotor for 3 PhD candidates in this field of research which I introduced in the AUMC, GI department in 2017(1 completed, 1 near-completion and 1 new candidate starting in september 2022).

I have also a strong interest in the management of early rectal cancer and transanal approaches for rectal cancer. The lower GI departement of the AUMC is one of the leading centres world wide in this field. Important in this area is also the prevention and management of anastomotic leaks. The Multicenter IMARI trial has completed the first phase and in october 2022 we will initiate the intervention arm. For this study I am the project leader and co-promotor of several PhD candidates that are or have been involved in this trial.

One new area of research will focus on IBD surgery, where I will take over the role of my mentor Prof. Willem Bemelman. this research will be done together with the PI's of the Gastrorenterology department and my colleague Dr. Christianne Buskens. Here my main focus will be on the potential role of tissue specific fluophores, surgical innovation and prevention of recurrences.
