Research interests

Assistant professor and psychiatrist, personifying the endeavor to translate (neuro)science to psychiatric clinical practice and vice versa. Strives to put fascination for how our brain affects our thoughts, feelings and behavior to optimal societal use.

Obtained a PhD cum laude in 2017 in international collaboration with the Universities of Oxford, Amsterdam and California, San Diego. Findings on neurometabolic alterations in psychiatry resulted in treatment recommendations in (inter)national guidelines. Continued a research career as a post-doc and currently assistant professor on transdiagnostic effects of deep brain stimulation (DBS) in psychiatric disorders, in combination with clinical work as a psychiatrist.

Authored diverse peer-reviewed international scientific publications in diverse high impact journals including Brain, Biological Psychiatry, JAMA and JAMA Psychiatry, Molecular Psychiatry, and the American Journal of Psychiatry. Presented at (inter)national conferences including plenary lectures at the conferences of the Society of Biological Psychiatry. Awarded several prizes and awards including the prestigious DSM Bright Science & Technology award, Amsterdam UMC best PhD thesis award, and the distinguished Ramaer Medal of the Dutch Psychiatric Society. Obtained personal funding for PhD and post-doc research from the ABC, AMC, FADDS, Hersenstichting and ZonMW, and collaborated in successful funding from the EU and APH. Teaches in diverse curricula, and acts as co-promotor of five PhD-trajectories, one of which has been completed successfully already. Selected member of the Young Health Council of the Netherlands, the committee of scientific activities of the Dutch Psychiatric Society and board member of “De Jonge Psychiater”. Organizes scientific congresses and sets up (online) platforms to further bridge the translational gap between neuroscience and clinical psychiatric practice.
