Pancreatic and hepatobiliary surgery
Pancreatic cancer
Marc Besselink co-founded the Dutch Pancreatic Cancre Group (DPCG), is the chair of the scientific committee and the manager of the Dutch Pancreatic Biobank (Parelsnoer). The DPCG consists 90 medical specialists, 8 PhD students and nurses involved with the care for pancreatic cancer in 17 Dutch hospitals, including all university medical centers. The group in the AMC focusses on minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopy) and treatment of locally irresectable pancreatic cancer with induction chemotherapy and ablation strategies (irreversible electroporation and radiofrequency ablation). The group involves pancreatic surgeons, interventional radiologists, gastroenterologists, medical oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and 6 PhD students.
Current projects include:
1.PACAP; Dutch Pancreatic Cancer Project; a nationwide project incorporating the Dutch Pancreatic Cancer Audit (DPCA) data; Dutch Pancreatic Biobank (Parelsnoer) and Patient reported outcomes.
2.LAELAPS nationwide training programme for laparoscopic pancreatic surgery (both pancreatoduodenectomy and distal pancreatectomy)
3.LEOPARD trials: randomized controlled multicenter trial for minimally invasive versus open pancreatic surgery (both pancreatoduodenectomy and distal pancreatectomy)
4.PELICAN trial: randomized controlled multicenter trial on induction FOLFIRINOX chemotherapy and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) in patients with locally non-resectable pancreatic cancer
Pancreatitis
Marc Besselink co-founded the Dutch Pancreatitis Study Group (DPSG) of which the first 5 randomized controlled trials were all published in the top 3 general-medical journals; PROPATRIA-Lancet 2008, PANTER-New Engl J Med 2010, PENGUIN-JAMA 2012, PYTHON-New Engl J Med 2014. PONCHO-Lancet 2016. The DPSG consisting of 120+ medical specialists, 6 PhD students and 2 nurses involved with the care for pancreatitis patients in 25 Dutch hospitals including all university medical centers. The AMC group focusses on timing of minimally invasive intervention and optimalization of clinical treatment of acute pancreatitis.
Current projects include:
1.POINTER trial: randomized controlled multicenter trial for early vs postponed catheter drainage in infected necrotizing pancreatitis.
2.TENSION trial: randomized controlled multicenter trial for endoscopic transluminal vs minimally invasive surgical necrosectomy
