Cancers in the Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary region

Project Details

Description

Tumours arising in the pancreas and biliary tree are notorious for their aggressive biological behavior. They all show a similar histomorphology and are difficult to distinguish from one another, while this is essential for subsequent distinct treatments 3-7. HPB-biobanking has helped to collect large cohorts of high quality biospecimens with cliniopathological details 8,9, which have enabled us to perform gene expression-based 10,11, miRNA 12,13, and glycan profiling 14 for pancreatic cancer. Immunohistochemistry a.o. helps to further characterize subtypes 15-18, and identify biomarkers for subtypes and response to therapy 19. Diagnostics may also be improved by DNA-based and minimally invasive methods 20-24.
Biochemical and DNA-based methods are also deployed to presurgically distinguish between pancreatic cyst types 25.
Finally, we collaborate in the PANcreatic disease ReseArch (PANDoRA) consortium, which aims to uncover new genetic factors for pancreatic cancer risk and survival 26-30.
