SYMptom monitoring with Patient-Reported Outcomes using a web application among LUNG cancer patients in the Netherlands

Project Details

Description

This multicenter stepped wedge RCT investigated the effectiveness of an online PRO application for lung cancer patients to weekly monitor their symptoms. A scoring algorithm was used to assess the severity of the symptoms. If symptoms exceeded a predefined threshold an alert was sent by e-mail to the health care practitioner (active intervention) or to the patient (reactive intervention).
The primary aim of this study was to compare the effect of weekly online PROM symptom monitoring via a reactive approach (patient receives alert) or an active approach (HCP receives alert) with care as usual on health-related quality of life up both during and up to 1 year after start of treatment. Secondary aims were investigating the effect of the app compared to usual care on incidence and grade of symptoms, progression and overall survival, medication adherence and cost effectiveness. Additionally implementation fidelity will be analyzed.
