Immunosuppression in Surgical Patients

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterAcademicpeer-review

Abstract

Patients with a compromised immune system are a heterogeneous group, and when in need of surgery, have an enhanced perioperative risk. Diagnosis of complications can be difficult because of disguised clinical manifestations, causing a delay in the start of treatment, eventually leading to increased morbidity and mortality rates. Immunocompetence can be altered by stress responses evoked by the onset of acute illness, a surgical procedure, or postoperative complications. This chapter provides an overview of immunosuppressed patients undergoing surgery divided into six different groups: patients on steroids, after transplantation, with HIV or AIDS, elderly, patients with malnutrition, and with malignancy.
