N2 - Ankle sprains and instability are among the most common musculoskeletal disorders in track and field athletes. They are associated with pain, loss of function, inability to sport, and loss of performance. Adequate diagnosis and treatment of ankle sprains will minimize the risk of long-term consequences including chronic instability and cartilage degeneration. The current chapter serves as a comprehensive overview of the most important aspects of diagnosis and treatment of lateral ankle sprains and instability with a special consideration for this type of injury in track and field athletes.
