Abstract
Bunker 599 is a sliced open bunker that is part of the UNESCO nominated New Dutch Waterline. When we cut it, the bunker was municipal monument, after slicing the bunker became a national monument. This artwork questions the practice of cultural heritage conservation. It is a material thinking model in that it shows the value of imagination for cultural heritage practices and inspired change. It won a prize by the Royal Institute of British Architects and had a big impact on the policies of the Dutch National Heritage agency, which uses the Bunker as an example for more imaginative heritage policies.
