Abstract

Anxiety disorders (ADs) and obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs) comprise multiple mental disorders, characterized by high levels of anxiety, dysfunctional catastrophic thoughts and most often substantial avoidance. These disorders contribute a significant burden to individual patients and society, due to high prevalence, early onset of symptoms, chronic course, high levels of impairment and high comorbidity. Although the various disorders have very specific symptom profiles, as described in the classification systems, they share phenomenological characteristics and underlying etiology and pathophysiology.
