Abstract
NVVA-guidelines ensure and improve the quality of medical science in nursing homes. This article describes the process that is used to develop these guidelines. Medical issues are suitable for NVVA-guidelines when they occur frequently in the nursing home practice and when sufficient scientific literature is available. This scientific information is gathered and selected by a group of nursing home physicians and other professionals. The actual composition of the group depends on the subject of the guideline. The obtained information is translated into several advises for daily practice. If the guidelines meet specific quality criteria and when a second opinion by other community members has been exerted, implementation of the guidelines will follow. The whole process takes about 2 years. Subsequently the guidelines need to be evaluated and adjusted to new insights on a regular basis. It is necessary to use the NVVA-guidelines in daily practice, since they stimulate evidence-based medicine in nursing homes.
