Abstract

A survey of research activities in rehabilitation medicine in the Netherlands 1985-1993 has identified 350 studies. The research activities were spread over a large number of institutions and diagnostic groups, indicating a fragmentation of the scarcely available research potential in Dutch rehabilitation medicine. Most research activities were of a pragmatic type with few theory-oriented research projects. The survey indicates that there is a great need for permanent financing of research programmes and the development of strong research lines. Requirements for progress in rehabilitation research include a multidisciplinary approach and long-term research programmes, aimed at developing a general rehabilitation theory.
