Abstract

Serous carcinomas are the most common ovarian malignancies. Despite the morbidity and mortality caused by this disease, little is known on its carcinogenesis. In fact, the epithelium of origin has been a matter of debate. In 2004 a review was published on three possible tissues of origin: the ovarian surface epithelium, the secondary Müllerian system, and the tubal epithelium. Recent evidence shows the tubal epithelium to be the predominant site for serous ovarian carcinogenesis. In this article we review recent evidence showing the tubal epithelium to be an important site for serous ovarian carcinogenesis.
