Niet-tuberculeuze mycobacterie als oorzaak voor een cervicofaciale zwelling bij kinderen

Abstract

The potential differential diagnoses for peri-auricular and neck lumps in children are extensive. A mass persisting for more than 3 weeks without clinical signs may be suspicious for lymphadenitis caused by non-tuberculous mycobacteria. Non-tu-berculous mycobacterial cervicofacial lymphadenitis is an infection that almost exclusively affects children, most commonly between the ages of 0 and 5 years. Despite the self-limiting nature of this disease, patients may experience a prolonged symptomatic period resulting in fistulization and scarring. In the current paper, the epidemiology, diagnostic process, and treatment options for cervicofacial lymphadenitis caused by non-tubercu-lous mycobacteria are discussed following a case description. Moreover, the existing literature, botlenecks and ongoing research projects are dis-cussed.Keywords Cervicofacial lym
