Quality of Life in CSF Leak

Abstract

Measuring quality of life (QOL) and using validated patient-rated information to evaluate clinical care and enhance doctor-patient communication has become increasingly important. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea impacts quality of life in multiple ways, not only by means of its inherent risk of developing meningitis, but also by its symptoms and (surgical) measures needed for treatment. Patient-reported outcome measures can be divided into generic and disease-specific QOL instruments. A disease-specific questionnaire for CSF rhinorrhea does not exist yet, but should include a sinonasal, a psychological as well as a neurological domain to cover all aspects including the impact of closure technique. Given the expanding indications for endoscopic endonasal surgery with a potential rise in incidence of CSF rhinorrhea a validated QOL instrument could be of great value in the balanced evaluation of patient care.
