Abstract

Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disease of the neuromuscular junction that is most often caused by antibodies to the acetylcholine receptor at the neuromuscular junction. Myasthenia gravis is characterized by muscular weakness that worsens over the course of the day or with prolonged physical activity, and that improves at rest. Patients can also present with dysphagia, dysarthria and difficulty in chewing. This case report describes a young woman with dysphagia as a sole manifestation of myasthenia gravis diagnosed by means of videofluoroscopy of the swallowing act.
