Abstract

A recurrent urologic al dilemma is whether men with a bladder stone should undergo a transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) simultaneously with cystolithotripsy to prevent recurrent bladder stones and to facilitate stone discharge. There are reports that even without a simultaneous TURP the percentage of bladder stone recurrences is low. In this retrospective multicenter study the value of TURP at the time of cystolithotripsy was investigated to prevent recurrent bladder stones. A total of 127 patients were included in five centers. TURP simultaneously with cystolithotripsy seemed to have a modest protective effect (NNT = 7). 81% of patients who did not undergo a TURP simultaneously, remained free of bladder stone recurrence. As far as we are concerned, shared decision making applies as the new adage for men with bladder stones.
