Dr. Femke Mol is a gynaecologist at Amsterdam University Medical Center's Centre for Reproductive Medicine.
Her research has mostly focused on assessing natural fertility in women and assessing the benefit of fertility treatments when compared to attempting a pregnancy at home. The publication of the ESEP RCT on surgical management of ectopic pregnancy in the Lancet provided trustworthy information for women and clinicians to make an informed decision about whether to save the tube or not. The publication of the EXIUI RCT on IUI in unexplained subfertility demonstrated a benefit of IUI, therefore IUI remains an alternative to IVF and an option for couples who have poor pregnancy chances at home to increase their chances to have a child.
In recent years, her focus of research concentrated on assisted reproduction and the outcomes of mothers and babies. She hopes to improve basic understanding on why pregnancies after IVF are at increased risk of complications. She collaborates with biologists in the department to assess natural and artificial endometrium. This is important for women who have preserved their oocytes (fertility preservation) and want to use them in the future, requiring an artificial cycle.
She recentely completed the ANTARCTICA-2 RCT, which demonstrated that home-based ovulation tracking is comparable to hospital-controlled ovulation monitoring to time frozen embryo transfer (The Lancet Oct 2024). This will save countless ultrasounds, injections, and transportation costs, helping to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The PhD thesis of Tjitske Zaat, which she co-supervised, was recognised as the best thesis of 2023. A future goal is to time the oocyte retrieval also with home-based monitoring, an innovation grant allows a pilot study.
