Abstract

In bacterial endocarditis in drug addicts, the pathophysiological mechanism, causative agent, clinical picture and treatment differ in several respects from the endocarditis that was observed up to 10 years ago. A description is presented of the experience gathered in 10 patients who were hospitalized with this pathological condition. A noticeable element was the high frequency of septic pulmonary complications which may mask the underlying endocarditis. The value of echo-cardiographic diagnostic examination is discussed at some length.
