Abstract
Although compression therapy improves venous ulcer healing, it does not treat the underlying causes of venous hypertension. Treatment of superficial venous reflux has been shown to reduce the rate of ulcer recurrence. Ulcer patients can benefit from additional intervention apart from conservative compression therapy alone. A recent randomized trial shows that early endovenous ablation and/or treatment with foamsclerotherapy of the superficial venous reflux results in faster healing of venous leg ulcers and more time free from ulcers than deferred endovenous ablation. Also, the rate of ulcer recurrence after one year was lower in the early-intervention group compared with the deferred-intervention group.
