Abstract

Sepsis can be associated with profound alterations in the coagulation and fibrinolytic system. We discuss recent insights in the pathogenetic mechanisms of the activation of coagulation and focus on the relations of the coagulation, fibrinolytic, and inflammatory pathways. In addition, we address the role of natural inhibitors of coagulation like protein C, antithrombin, and tissue factor pathway inhibitor. Finally, we speculate on how these insights may translate into new treatment strategies for sepsis. (C) 2000 Lippincott Williams and Wilkins, Inc.
