Abstract
We measured the right ventricular and left ventricular wall mass, wall thickness, end-diastolic volume, and stroke volume often patients with emphysema and ten age-matched healthy participants by using a new magnetic resonance imaging protocol. The patients with emphysema had a significantly larger ratio of right ventricular to left ventricular wall thickness; left ventricular ejection fraction was significantly lower compared with the control group. A leftward displacement of the ventricular septum during systole was observed in patients with both emphysema and marked right ventricular hypertrophy. These patients had a better left ventricular ejection fraction when compared with patients who did not have right ventricular hypertrophy. Thus, a decrease of left ventricular ejection fraction in patients with emphysema does not reflect the development of cor pulmonale.
