Getting to know you: Did nursing home residents with dementia feel that their carers got to know them better through a Photo-Activity?

Abstract

The Fotoscope app is a digital tool for delivering a person-centered Photo-Activity (PA) to nursing home residents with dementia.
Here, the (in)formal carer and resident view artistic, generic, black and white photos that are based on the resident’s personal
interest as inquired of his/her family beforehand. Alongside a randomized controlled trial into the effects of the intervention on social
interaction, mood, behaviour and quality of life, a process evaluation was done to investigate contextual, implementation and
mechanisms of impact factors that may influence the intervention outcomes. Results on the process evaluation analyses will be
reported at the congress. One of the main research questions was whether residents offered the PA, compared to a control
conversation activity, felt better seen and heard as a person and whether the (in)formal carers got to know the resident better.
A process evaluation with semi-structured interviews based on the British Medical Research Council Guidance for process
evaluation was carried out with nursing home residents (28 PA; 28 control), informal carers (28 PA; 25 control) and formal carers (25
PA; 26 control).
Of the PA residents 89.2% agreed they felt heard (82.1% for control residents) and 25% reported that their carer got to know them ‘a
lot better’ (3.6% for control residents). Meanwhile 44% of formal carers who did the PA with the resident reported getting to know the
resident ‘much better’ (15.4% for control carers). 25% of informal carers who participated but did not deliver the PA intervention
reported that the resident had spoken about the PA to them during the intervention period (20% for control informal carers).
The PA seems to make more residents feel their carers got to know them better, and vice-versa, than the control activity. More
residents also seem to discuss the PA with their informal carers compared to control residents
