Abstract

A better understanding of recovery after stroke is of paramount importance. Effective rehabilitation requires a multidisciplinary management, early start of mobilization, a sufficient dose of therapy and simultaneous support of care givers. Systematic review of the literature shows that Neurodevelopmental Therapy (NDT) or Bobath concept is not superior when compared to other approaches. This finding is in agreement with the growing evidence that recovery of skills such as upper limb function and gait mainly builds on learning to compensate existing neurological deficits. In order to intensify task specific training, early started innovate treatment paradigms such as (group or) circuit class training, additional support by stroke nurses and trained volunteers as well as continuation in the weekends are warranted within existing stroke services.
