Abstract

In children HIV infection is generally the result of perinatal transmission of the virus. The efficacy of antiretroviral treatment in adults and children seems comparable. However, it is more difficult to maintain undetectable levels of viral load in children. The profile of side effects is similar in adults and children, but the symptoms are generally less severe. Poor compliance with therapy can result in a reduced efficacy of therapy and the development of resistance. However, only a limited number of studies on compliance with antiretroviral therapy in children are available.
