Abstract

In this presentation, a range of genital dermatoses will be reviewed. To a large extent, these are caused by sexually transmitted infections. However, there are also genital infections that are not contracted through sexual contact, such as anaerobic and aerobic balanitis, bacterial vaginosis and candidiasis. There are also genital dermatoses indirectly related to infections, such as circinate balanitis in the context of reactive arthritis, whether or not associated with sexual transmission. Other examples of reactive genital manifestations are Mondor’s disease and sclerosing lymphangitis. Finally, there are genital dermatosis for which an infectious cause is suspected but not yet proven; these include balanitis plasmocellularis (according to van Zoon), lichen sclerosus, and lichen planus. The pathogenesis, diagnostics, treatment and prognosis will be discussed for each dermatosis.
