Abstract

The present article describes the results of studies on the efficacy of inhalation corticosteroids in the treatment of COPD. Treatment for six months to three years did not influence lung function at the long term. No or only a slight effect on the frequency and severity of exacerbations was observed. An effect on quality of life was also not observed. Two recent one year studies have shown that combined inhalation corticosteroids and β 2-sympathomimetics reduced the symptoms and the frequency of exacerbations. To what extent the effects sustain on the long term remains to be studied. Combination of inhalation corticosteroids and β 2-sympathomimetics may be useful.
