Abstract

Allergic contact dermatitis is an eczematous reaction due to contact with allergens. The immunological mechanisms underlying allergic and irritant contact dermatitis reactions are different. However, histopathology of allergic or irritant contact dermatitis can be virtually indistinguishable. In former days, potential allergens were tested in human volunteers or in animal models. Here, we explore the possible use of in vitro tests for discriminating between allergens and irritants.
