Abstract
Symptoms are often at their worst when patients visit their doctor, and also get better without intervening. This can happen thanks to a phenomenon we call regression to the mean. A doctor appreciates that if they say ‘give it a few more days’, to check whether symptoms subside. In medical research, we also account for this, by having a control group as a comparison.
