Abstract

Most infections start at mucosal surfaces, which form an interface with the outside world. Immunological protection of these surfaces is provided by the secretions of various glands, such as the salivary and ocular glands and the glands of the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary tracts. This article provides an overview of the secretory immune parameters utilized in stress research, explains the neurobiological basis for the stress-induced changes in mucosal secretory immunity, and summarizes main findings in the area of stress research. © 2007
