MYELINATION AS AN EXPRESSION OF THE FUNCTIONAL MATURITY OF THE BRAIN

A prospective cross‐sectional study was performed on hydrocephalic infants and children. MRI was used to assess the state of myelination and to quantify the intracranial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) volume repeatedly in all children. At the same time, neurodevelopmental testing was performed. A positive correlation was found between the progress of myelination and psychomotor development, but there were no significant correlations between CSF volume and myelination or between CSF volume and psychomotor development. This study provides strong evidence in favour of Flechsig's thesis that myelination expresses the functional maturity of the brain. The interdependency of neuronal maturation and progress of myelination are discussed. La myélinisation, expression de la maturité fonctionnelle du cerveau Une étude transversale prospective a été réalisé chez des nourrissons et des enfants hydrocéphales. L'I. R. M. fut utilisé pour apprécier l'état de la myélinisation et quantifier le volume de liquide céphalo‐rachidien (L. C. R.), de façon répétée chez tous les enfants. Parallèlement, des tests neurodéveloppementaux furent réalisés. Une corrélation positive fut notée entre le progrès de la myélinisation et el développement psucho‐moteur, mais il n'y avait pas de corrélation significative entre le volume de L. C. R. et la myélinisation, ou entre le volume de L. C. R. et le développement psychomoteur. Cette étude apporte de forts arguments en faveur de la thèse de Flechsig selon laquelle, la myélinsation exprime la maturité fonctionnelle de cerveau. L'interdépendance de la maturation neuronique et du progrès de la myélinsation est discutée. MRI Untersuchungen wurden eingesetzt, um bei allen Kindern wiederholt den Myelinisationsgrad zu bestimmen und das Volumen des intrakraniellen Liquors (CSF) zu quantifizieren. Zur gleichen Zeit wurden entwicklungsneurologische Tests durchgeführt. Es fand sich eine positive Korrelation zwischen dem Fortschreiten der Myelinisation und der psychomotorischen Entwicklung, dagegen gab es keine signifikante Beziehung zwischen CSF Volumen und Myelinisation und zwischen CSF Volumen und psychomotorischer Entwicklung. Diese Studie liefert Argumente für Flechsig's Theorie, die besagt, daß die Myelinisation Ausdruck der funktionellen Reife des Gehirns ist. Es wird über den Zusammenhang zwischen neuronaler Reifung und dem Fortschreiten der Myelinisation diskutiert. Mielinización como expresión de la madurez funcional del cerebro Se llevó a cabo un estudio prospectivo transversal en lactantes hidrocefálicos. Se utilizó la IRM para evaluar el estado de mielinización y cuantificar el volumen de líquido‐céfalo‐raquídeo (LCR) de forma repetida en to dos los niños. Al mismo tiempo se realizó una exploración del neurodesarrollo. Se halló una correlación positiva entre el progreso de la mielinización y el desarrollo psicomotor, pero no hubo ninguna correlación significativa entre el volumen del LCR y la mielinización, ni entre aquél y el desarrollo psicomotor. Este estudio proporciona una fuerte evidencia en favor de la tesis de Flechsig de que la mielinización expresa la madurez funcional del cerebro. Se discute la interdependencia entre la maduración neuronal y el progreso de la mielinización.
