Abstract
Unplanned hospital readmission is an undesirable life event for the patient. There is some discussion whether hospital readmission is a reliable indicator of the quality of care. A recently developed classification system for hospital readmissions distinguishes between planned and unplanned readmissions. This classification system offers perspectives for the validation of readmission as a quality indicator and a better understanding of the relationship between admission and readmission
