Abstract

No trials have been performed to investigate if the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) is of any more benefit than the fasting glucose value alone, which is a less expensive and less time consuming alternative. In daily practice, the first and most effective intervention offered to patients at risk of diabetes mellitus type 2, is lifestyle intervention. These patients can be identified relatively easily using clinical parameters such as fasting glucose, BMI, age and family history. These parameters also have better predictive value for future cardiovascular risk than the OGTT. Finally, the OGTT is poorly reproducible, especially in comparison with fasting glucose. Therefore, the OGTT is obsolete in screening for diabetes mellitus type 2
