Abstract
Hypertriglyceridaemia is known to be capable of inducing a pancreatitis, among other things. During pregnancy a physiological increment of triglycerides takes place. As a result of this a serious health risk arises for women with a pre-existent hypertriglyceridaemia, with both a high maternal and foetal mortality. There is also a very likely relationship between hypertriglyceridaemia and the genesis of pre-eclampsia. A woman with hypertriglyceridaemia and a caesarean section because of pre-eclampsia in her history, wanted to become pregnant again and came to our outpatient clinic for preconceptional advice. Based on literature research we describe the mechanisms responsible for the rise in triglycerides during pregnancy and the way it can induce complications like pre-eclampsia. We conclude this article with possibilities for treatment of this condition.
