N2 - The guideline 'Ingestion of foreign bodies in children aged 0-18 years' was developed by a multidisciplinary working group on behalf of the Dutch Pediatric Association and published in March 2019. The ingestion of foreign bodies can lead to severe complications and even mortality The absence of symptoms does not rule out the ingestion of a foreign body. In the secondary and tertiary care setting, radiographs should be performed in both symptomatic and asymptomatic children with a suspicion of foreign body ingestion. It is essential to visualize from the teeth down to the abdomen on the anterior-posterior and, possible lateral, radiograph. The timing of endoscopic removal depends on type and localization of the foreign body and symptoms of the child.
