Abstract
Determination when patients with short bowel syndrome grow independently of parenteral nutrition remains a large clinical problem. A possible parameter with positive predictive value for enteric function could be plasma citrulline. Citrulline is a non-protein amino acid, produced by the enterocyte. To support this hypothesis, we report of two patients with short bowel syndrome in whom this marker has been determined during the course of their disease.
