Abstract
In the Netherlands, the National Co-ordination Centre for Advice to Travellers publishes protocols for health advice to travellers and the malaria bulletin. The recommendations are based on expert discussions. Health advice to travellers should be provided by Municipal Health Services, travel clinics and general practitioners with specific expertise. Pharmacists will, when dispensing the drugs and vaccines, supply adequate information, check quality and look for incompatibility with other medication. Thus pharmacists should be well-informed in the area of travel medicine. Valid data on travellers, risks of diseases, problems during and after travel and efficacy of advised measures are scarce; more, well designed research is needed. The various diseases that can be prevented by vaccination are discussed briefly.
