Abstract

Due to years of health complaints, people diagnosed with fibromyalgia may already have adjusted their carreers towards physically lighter jobs. In a population with two years of sick leave, 95 women with fibromyalgia are compared with 96 female controls. It is hypothesized that the people with fibromyalgia have physically lighter jobs. The job strength at the onset of sick leave was determined with criteria from the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT). In the control group 57[%] had a high job strength (score > 2 on a 1 to 5 scale) versus 51[%] in the fibromyalgia group. The effect size increased when only people with 1 diagnosis were analysed: 51[%] of the cases did heavy work versus 64[%] of the controls. Some women with fibromyalgia appear to have chosen lighter jobs before sickness absence. Analysing their sick leave, might be preferable to adjusting the job to lower physical demands.
