Abstract

Preconceptional cystic fibrosis (CF) carrier screening allows couples at risk to arrive at informed reproductive decisions. In a large proportion of the target group, i.e. couples who are planning to have children, there is a positive attitude towards routinely offering preconceptional CF carrier screening, and many potential providers such as general practitioner (GPs) share these views. GPs could play an important role in screening by providing pre-test counselling. However, it is expected that due to several obstacles, support will not be that high. Before screening can be implemented, these obstacles, such as a lack of experiences with non-directive counselling among GPs, must be overcome. The next step is the development of a large implementation study, to answer the question whether screening on a larger scale is possible.
